About Us

Southgates was established in Withernsea by Stephen Southgate in 1981, practicing as S. R. Southgate Chartered Accountant. In 1984 the practice moved to Owthorne Manor on Hubert Street, Withernsea before moving to Hedon in February 2022.

Antony Rookes started with Southgates in 1987 and became a partner in June 1999. The firm has practiced as Southgates Chartered Certified Accountants since then. Stephen retired in May 2001.

Andrew Guy joined the practice in 1997 aged 16 and has been in partnership with Tony since June 2011.

The ethos of the practice is to act as more than a simple accountant whose clients see them at best once a year to complete a Tax Return. We aim to be available to our clients on a daily basis to help them with the running of their businesses and to remove the stress of having to deal with business finances alone.

Southgates has always prided itself with its standard of training and actively encourages all staff to train for appropriate qualifications with the AAT, ATT and ACCA and follow on with continued professional development.

Southgates have a team of thirteen including four ACCA qualified accountants. In addition to the partners Lewis Ford has attained the ACCA qualification whilst training with the practice.

The practice has always aimed to provide a high quality service to our clients at an affordable price and to always make ourselves available for client’s needs.

Southgates have always embraced new technology especially cloud based bookkeeping software. The firm offers support and advice to clients looking to digitise their accounts ahead of the Making Tax Digital regime.
